Google has deleted over 2,500 YouTube channels as part of an ‘ongoing investigation into coordinated influence campaigns linked to China, according to Reuters.

The tech giant said that most of the channels’ content was ‘spammy’ and not political, though propaganda was present in a small subset. The technique of embedding politics in otherwise innocuous content is a well established technique of online information warfare.

The accounts were deleted between April and June, with similar activity spotted by fellow social media company Twitter. In the past China has denied that they spread disinformation on western platforms.
