At present time, Gardai only have powers to test for alcohol, but the Medical Bureau of Road Safety is reportedly set to introduce a new device that will enable members of the Gardai to test for drugs also at all road accidents.

The Bureau and the Government hope that the new measure will help to curtail the rising number of road deaths across the country.

Reportedly, 7 in every 10 specimens examined by the Bureau tested positive for drugs in the period between 2007 and 2013.
