Government condemns traveller row in Rathkeale saying they’ll do what they can to stop further escalation

The acting Minister for Justice Simon Harris has condemned what have been described as public order and dangerous driving incidents in Rathkeale, Co Limerick, as members of the Garda Regional Armed Support Unit arrive to support local officers.

Gardaí around the city responded yesterday afternoon to a report of several vehicles driving dangerously through the city.

When they arrived at the scene, they ordered several people to disperse and the road was closed for the investigation.

Several vehicles that were left on the road were confiscated.

Simon Harris condemned the incident, saying what happened was absolutely unacceptable.

Mr Harris traveled to Co Limerick this evening where he was briefed by the Gardaí on the ongoing investigation into yesterday’s riots.

He later condemned the events in the city, saying they had no place in a civilized society.

The minister said the events at Rathkeale were “abhorrent, utterly unacceptable and would not be tolerated”, reports RTE.

He said that he had a good meeting with law enforcement officials, during which he promised that the government would provide all necessary resources to solve the problem.

Earlier, the minister said he had been assured that a greater police presence over Christmas would continue to be part of the policing plan in Rathkeale.
