Garda recovering after being knocked unconscious and dragged 50 feet after being hit by stolen car in Wexford

A Garda was knocked unconscious and fractured a shoulder blade after being dragged up to 15 meters by a stolen car during the night.

The shocking incident took place in Wexford around midnight and resulted in the uniformed officer being taken to hospital.

Two Dublin suspects have since been arrested as part of the investigation and questioned by the Gardaí.

The Garda Representative Association (GRA) said it is highlighting the dangers its members face on a daily basis.

Gardaí were alerted to the unauthorized seizure of a white BMW car at the Cois Doire estate in Gorey just before midnight on Tuesday.

Sources told the vehicle was later spotted at a local service station before Gardaí encountered it and attempted to intercept it in Willow Park.

A Garda approached the vehicle, which had come to a standstill during this phase, and tried to attack the occupants, but the stolen BMW drove away at full speed.

The 40-year-old officer was pulled up to 15 meters when the car drove up a curb before being thrown to the ground.

Sources said he was knocked unconscious and taken to the hospital. He also suffered a fractured shoulder blade and possible concussion and has since been discharged from hospital.

His colleague, the driver of the patrol car, are shocked after they witnessed the accident but they are not injured.

A short time later, the Gardaí arrested two men between the ages of 20 and 20 in connection with the unauthorized seizure of the car and the accident in which the Gardaí was injured.

They appear to have addresses in West Dublin and are currently being interrogated.

Gda John Cashman, a member of the GRA Central Executive Committee for Wexford, described the incident to his colleagues as “appalling”.

“Two of our officers responded to a call of a stolen car just before midnight and while at the scene, our members stopped the vehicle and while engaging with the suspects the driver attempted to take off again, resulting in our member being thrown to the ground and suffering serious injury,” reports Independent.

A Garda spokesman said investigations into the emergency and theft incidents were continuing.

“The male Garda member was taken to Wexford General Hospital for treatment of shoulder and arm injuries. The stolen vehicle and suspects were located a short time later,” reports Independent.
