Government confirm €100 conservation grant will be scrapped as Environment Minister Simon Coveney says water charges suspension will last no longer than 9 months

The much hated water charges will be definitely back in just a few months time according to the Minister for the Environment Simon Coveney.

Mr Coveney’s comments come as he reinstated that he is fully determined that the suspension of water charges will last for no longer than nine months. The Environment Minister also revealed that the €100 water conservation grant, will also be scrapped once the suspension.

Mr Coveney told the Irish Times last night: “Given the complexity of the issues involved, it is intended that a new commission will require professional expertise in funding and financing of large-scale infrastructure investment; economic regulation; water resources management; and water environmental law.”

Mr Coveney further explained: “To take the political heat out of this issue so we can get down to what makes sense on providing safe water in Ireland in a cost-effective manner”.
