Government confirm there will be no cuts imposed on Disability Allowance payments

Contrary to recent reports ministers have confirmed that Disability allowance payments will not be cut during the Government’s term in office.

The news comes after recent speculation suggested that disability allowances could be set for major reforms that would see payments being linked to an applicant’s ability to work. However according to both Minister for Social Protection Leo Varadkar and Junior Minister Finian McGrath, confirmed there is no plans to cut payments.

Both ministers stance regarding the issue was also echoed by the Taoiseach Enda Kenny who said any reform proposals for the Disability Allowance are only briefing documents, and any future decisions are a matter for the Government.

Various sources say the latest documents have been written to advise Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe that reforms to disability allowances should be considered, as current rules increase welfare dependency and further increase poverty.
