Government considering change to close contact rules as businesses fear breakdown in supply chains due to staff absences

It is thought that there may be changes to the isolation rules for Covid close contacts in the next few days.

According to RTE, Tanaiste Leo Varadkar tweeted about the matter today, referring to the latest guidelines from the European Centre for Disease Protection and Control (EECDPC), which he says may offer new option on close contact rules.

The advice from the EECDPC suggests some different options that may chance if the healthcare system and society is under what it terms “extreme pressure”.  In that case, close contacts would only have to wear high quality masks and socially distance for 10 days rather the go into isolation.

The latest discussion comes as employers’ group IBEC calls for a shortening on the current requirement for up to 10 days’ isolation.  Retail Ireland, a section of the organisation, has expressed concern that supply chains could break down over the next few weeks due to staff shortages.
