Government considers the idea of taxing motorists by the distance they travel, instead of raising excise duty

The Irish Government is said to be considering the idea of taxing motorists by the distance they travel, instead of paying excise duty on fuel consumed.

The reasoning behind the idea is that cars are steadily becoming more fuel-efficient, which will mean reduced tax intake for the Exchequer.

If implemented, the new taxing system would immediately put those with a long daily commute at a disadvantage.

The concept would be extremely difficult to actually implement and manage, which means it will likely not happen anytime soon.
