Government party leaders are discussing timing of general election and will “announce it soon”

The leaders of the three Government parties are scheduled to talk on the general election’s date, reports RTE.

Roderic O’Gorman of the Green Party and Micheál Martin of Fianna Fáil have stated that they would need clarification on the issue this week.

Simon Harris, the head of Fine Gael and Taoiseach, stated that the election will take place this year, reports RTE.

Speaking today, Mr. Harris stated that Mr. O’Gorman openly proposed November 29 as the election date and did not do it behind his back.

He went on to say that the Taoiseach has the constitutional right to declare an election on a particular date “without being prickly about it,” reports RTE.

As Green leader, Mr. O’Gorman stated that he reserved the right to have an opinion on this.

Fine Gael would run in the election as a separate party without a transfer agreement with the coalition partners, according to the Taoiseach.

Although he acknowledged that it is up to individuals to choose how they vote, he said that “if people thought this Government’s doing a good job, they may wish to vote in that manner.”

“I think this Government works well together,” Mr Harris told reporters in Dublin. We are three different parties. It’s been built on mutual respect. It’s been built on policy. I hope these are two things that can be maintained across the political divide throughout the election,” reports RTE.
