The Government are reportedly considering introducing news reforms to the Disability allowance which would see payments being linked to an applicant’s ability to work.
The new reforms have recently been sent to the Minister for Public Expenditure Paschal Donohoe. The new report which was given to Mr Donohoe last night suggests that disability allowances should be restructured in order to cut down on welfare dependency.
Mr Donohoe said: “Expenditure and numbers on disability allowance continues to rise. Current arrangements facilitate long-term welfare dependency, poor employment outcomes and elevated poverty rates.”
Mr Donohoe also suggested that income tests, medical and eligibility tests would be introduced to ensure that those whose “conditions improve” would stop getting disability allowances, and would be placed into employment.
