Students could face even higher fees in the near future as new report finds that current third level fees will not cover funding shortfall

There could be further bad news for prospective students in the months ahead as a latest report has revealed that the government’s proposed plan to increase college and university fees to €4,000 per year will not be enough to solve the funding shortfall.

According to the new report, published for Minister for Public Expenditure and Reform Paschal Donohoe, student fees should be significantly increased to cover all course materials provided by universities and colleges nationwide.

The new report, published by Peter Cassells, has called for the introduction of a student loan scheme “with the current €3,000 charge being converted to a €4,000 fee that is repayable when the student enters paid employment above a certain income levels”.

The recent plans by the Government to increase student fees has not gone down well with student unions, and this latest call for an even higher increase will surely see a number of young people opting out of third education as the current system is already deemed unfair and too expensive.
