Government sets aside a whopping €641m to house refugees from Ukraine #IrelandisFull

The Ministry of Integration has allocated 641 million euros for the accommodation of Ukrainian refugees in the coming year.

An additional €395 million was made available to applicants for international protection in 2023.

However, Minister Roderic O’Gorman is expected to tell the Oireachtas Committee on Children, Equality, Disability, Inclusion and Youth that he expects funding for these areas to “come under pressure in the course of the year,” reports RTE.

Secretary O’Gorman will outline how 20% of his budget is earmarked for housing refugees from Ukraine.

Most of the allocation goes to commercial suppliers. A portion of the funds will be spent on modular housing and early childhood education and care, support and services for Tusla and youth.

In his opening remarks, he is expected to tell members that this year will be a “challenging” one for the ministry when it comes to meeting housing requirements for international protection seekers and Ukrainian refugees.

Since the second half of 2021, the number of people seeking international protection has increased sharply and “last year there was a new record with just over 15,000 arriving here,” reports RTE.

He will tell members he is working closely with colleagues across government to address the resulting pressures on an already overloaded system and will update government on cost pressures.
