Government slammed as people turning 65 this year may have to claim the dole for two years before claiming the pension

The Government is facing heavy criticism, as it emerged that people turning 65 this year may possibly have to go on the dole for two years before being entitled to claim their pension.

Up to 30,000 might be affected by this development, after eligibility rules for the State Pension recently changed. The change effectively means that those turning 65 on or after January 1, 2020, will not be able to claim their State Pension until 2022.

Social media users joked that these people may have to ‘pretend’ that they are looking for work before receiving their paltry Jobseekers Benefit.
