Government spends hundreds of thousands on landline phones in prison cells so that prisoners can call their loved ones when it suits them

At a time when most people are finding it difficult to pay their phone bill, it has been revealed that the Government has spent hundreds of thousands of euro on landline telephones in prison cells throughout the country.

According to the Irish Examiner, the phones have been fitted so that prisoners can make phone calls from the comfort of their cell.  Right now they can only dial out, but providing a dial-in service is said to be under discussion.

In a decision that is likely to cause outrage, the Irish Prison Service has defended the move, incredibly supporting the system because it lets prisoners decide when it suits them best to speak to their loved ones.

Minister for Justice Helen McEntee said that this is a great idea because it’s vital for prisoners to be able to stay in touch with their family so that they can be rehabilitated.

There are even plans to install the telephones next year in Arbour Hill, which is the country’s central prison for sex offenders.
