The Government is set to veto plans to put a new tax on sales in off-licences according to sources.

It is understood that the coalition government will vote against a bill from Fianna Fáil in the Seanad tomorrow.

The proposed bill would have added 90c to a bottle of wine, or 25c to a can of beer, to fund suicide prevention.

A spokesperson for the government has said that Fine Gael and Labour had a more “holistic” approach to mental health and would not be approving the bill.
