In Dundalk, County Louth, gardaĆ and the PSNI conducted a significant multi-agency checkpoint on the N1/M1 on Thursday, reports Breaking News.
Two persons were denied leave to land at this checkpoint because the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) was conducting immigration checks on ten buses.
The two will be removed from the nation on Thursday evening, according to the GardaĆ, reports Breaking News.
The goal of the policing operation was to prevent and identify criminal activity along the border, as well as to prevent and disrupt the free movement of criminals based in the Republic and Northern Ireland. It focused on rural crime and human trafficking.
In addition to the immigration checks, four drug driving detections (with positive tests for cocaine and cannabis) were made, and other cars were detained for lacking insurance or taxes, among other road traffic offences, reports Breaking News.
Revenue Customs found that six cars had marked petrol oil, one of which was confiscated, and the Department of Social Protection identified 16 individuals for whom they would like to conduct more investigations.
Along with representatives from Customs and the Department of Social Protection, the operation was headed by gardaĆ from the Louth/Cavan/Monaghan Division, with assistance from the Garda Air Support Unit, Armed Support Unit, Garda National Immigration Bureau, and the Garda Human Trafficking Investigation Unit, reports Breaking News.
In addition to acting as a Mandatory Intoxicating Testing (MIT) roadblock, the Garda operation concentrated on reducing traffic fatalities by maintaining a high-profile police presence.
A comprehensive traffic management strategy was put into place by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, which directed all traffic to get off the N1 southbound at Junction 18 and onto a slip road where the checkpoint was located over the course of four hours.
Sgt Declan Higgins of the Louth Roads Policing Unit said: “Under the JATF, we work closely with the PSNI and they have a similar checkpoint operation North of the border. What weāre trying to do is prevent criminals from using our road network. The checkpoint is also part of the road safety initiative of An Garda SĆochĆ”na, weāre targeting drink and drug drivers and also people driving without insurance,” reports Breaking News.
