Ukrainian students with Leaving Certificates will once more have their university costs free, reports RTE.
It said that Patrick O’Donovan, Minister of Further and Higher Education, is “minded to continue” the policies put in place the previous year that gave people escaping the conflict free access to postsecondary education.
At least 550 Ukrainian students are thought to have taken the Leaving Certificate test this year, according to data from the State Examinations Commission, reports RTE.
According to the data, the number of people taking the Russian exam this year has more than doubled from the previous two years.
432 applicants filed for the Russian test in 2022; by the previous year, that number had risen to 548, and this year it has soared to 889, reports RTE.
Since many Ukrainians speak Russian, the sharp increase in enrollment is probably due to the significant number of Ukrainian students completing their last year of education in this country.
Nonetheless, there could also be Ukrainian refugees taking the tests who choose not to sign up for the Russian exam, reports RTE.
