Govt must take responsibility for the terrible referendum result, says Coveney

According to Minister for Enterprise Simon Coveney, the Government as a whole must accept responsibility for the outcome of the Family and Care referendums, which saw a resounding rejection of the proposed constitutional reforms, reports RTE.

Speaking in Clonmel, County Tipperary, Mr. Coveney announced that Sean Kelly, the departing MEP, and businessman John Mullins will represent Fine Gael in the Ireland South seat of the June European elections.

The proposed changes to Care were heavily rejected by voters, who cast over 74% of the “No” votes, the greatest proportion of “No” votes ever recorded in an Irish referendum.

The Family referendum was likewise decisively lost, with slightly more than 67% of voters rejecting the amendment, reports RTE.

The coalition is now considering the record-breaking number of votes cast “no” on any subject posed to the public.

The Government as a whole, with Mr. Coveney’s assistance, needs to acknowledge the findings, evaluate them, and be forthright about what went wrong.

“We need to seriously assess what happened and fully understand why people voted the way they did,” Mr Coveney said, reports RTE.
