Govt says dog owners must take responsilibty for their pet

Owners “must take responsibility” to ensure their dogs do not harm others, the Minister of Rural and Community Development said as he signed off on new dog control laws, reports RTE.

More stringent dog control rules are being introduced, and fines imposed on the spot by owners are three times higher for breaking the law.

Minister Heather Humphreys signed the legislation after the high-profile attack.

Last year in Ireland, 460 people were hospitalised after dog attacks, including 144 children.

Among them was ten-year-old Alejandro Mizan, who was airlifted to hospital in Dublin after he was attacked by an XL tyrant dog while playing outside his home in Enniscorthy, reports RTE.

This breed will be banned in the UK.

Minister Humphreys expressed concern about the recent attacks and said he was confident the new measures would help promote responsible dog ownership.

“Dogs can be a wonderful addition to a family or farm, however, dog owners must take responsibility to ensure their dogs do not cause harm or nuisance to people or property. Recent events have again highlighted the dangers posed by dogs, and my thoughts are very much with those recovering following these horrific experiences,” reports RTE.
