Govt says Ukrainian numbers will fall with new lower social welfare payment and 90 day accommodation

Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman has predicted that the number of people coming to Ireland from Ukraine will decrease due to the changes agreed at Cabinet, reports RTE.

The government has decided to decrease welfare rates and limit State accommodation for new arrivals from Ukraine to 90 days.

The current rate of €220 per week will be reduced to €38.80 during the period that Ukrainian people stay in State accommodation. However, the higher welfare rate will be restored when they leave these centres, reports RTE.

Moreover, parents of children in State accommodation will continue to receive the full monthly child benefit payment of €140.

The government plans to launch a communications campaign soon, advising Ukrainians considering coming to Ireland that they will only receive State accommodation for 90 days, reports RTE.
