Govt will get plans for new migrant reception centres in the coming weeks

When Minister Roderic O’Gorman presents updated proposals to the Cabinet in the upcoming weeks, the Minister of State for Integration promises that details of the new receiving center plans will become clearer, reports RTE.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Saturday with Colm Ó Mongáin, Joe O’Brien said: “Two years ago it was obviously a different time and since then we have accommodated almost an additional 100,000 people, between Ukrainians and International Protection applicants,” reports RTE.

“That is the core reason why we don’t have the six centres now because we had to react on a weekly basis for a period of time now to make sure we had shelter for the majority of those 100,000 people that have come since then,” reports RTE.

He stated that although the plan has always existed, the last two years have been “exceptional,” which has prevented the strategy outlined in the white paper from moving forward.

Mr. O’Gorman will present updated ideas to the Cabinet in the upcoming weeks.

In the meantime, the Garda Representative Association stated that “it’s very hard to see” how An Garda Síochána can help newcomers to Ireland in addition to what it now does, reports RTE.
