Katie Taylor has qualified for the Rio Olympics after winning her AIBA World Women’s Elite Boxing Championship quarter-final against Mexico’s legendary Victoria Torres.
The 2012 gold medallist is now guaranteed at least a bronze medal in Brazil where she will defend her lightweight title she won in London.
Taylor is now looking for her sixth world title in a row. She won the bout on a unanimous points decision, 3:0.
The 29-yr-old Wicklow woman had too much skill and movement for the aggressive Mexican and will be pleased with her progress to Thursday’s semi-final.
Katie now joins Paddy Barnes, Brendan Irvine, Michael Conlan, David Oliver Joyce, Steven Donnelly and Joe Ward on the plane to Rio.
