Green Party confirms its ridiculous stance on tax for SUVs

According to the head of the Green Party, the party has no plans to impose a charge on automobile emissions, reports FM 104.

According to reports, Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael were preventing the introduction of a tax on SUVs and HGVs prior to the general election.

Although Minister Roderic O’Gorman has stated that no such charge is currently being contemplated, the two biggest coalition parties are opposing some aspects of the National Demand Management Strategy.

But there are worries about the amount of car tax being paid going down, he says: “No proposals for new taxes. It does flag the issue that as more people move to e-cars, as we have fewer petrol and diesel cars, the ORT motor tax is going to decrease. And that’s a big chunk of the income, it’s a big chunk of what Jack would have allocated in the budget a couple of weeks ago. And we are going to look at ways of how we fill that gap,” reports FM 104.

Dublin City Councillor Hazel Chu of the Green Party believes that more climate leadership is required.

“If we don’t try to roll up our sleeves and make sure that we are polluting less and make sure that we fight back against climate action – Climate action is here on the agenda. Fianna Fáil and Fianna Gael know that and they need to continue to push behind that instead of going out and saying, well, we can’t do that,” reports FM 104.
