Putin says he is ‘ready’ to talk with ‘courageous’ US President Donald Trump

Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, congratulated Donald Trump on winning the US presidential election and stated that he was “ready” to talk to the “courageous” candidate, reports RTE.

Mr. Putin remarked, “I take this opportunity to congratulate him,” during his speech at the Valdai forum in Sochi, in the south.

“Ready” is how the Russian leader responded when asked if he was willing to speak with Mr. Trump.

When asked which candidate may be best for Russia, Mr. Putin had stated in public ahead of the US vote that he would love to see Joe Biden and Kamala Harris in the White House, reports RTE.

However, Moscow has long been perceived as appreciating Mr. Trump’s anti-establishment stance and the turmoil he has brought to both American and international affairs.

Many people accused Moscow of meddling in the 2016 presidential election in order to support Mr. Trump’s bid against Hilary Clinton. The accusations have been denied by the Kremlin on several occasions, reports RTE.

The head of the Kremlin also expressed his admiration for Trump’s self-control amid an attempted assassination at a rally earlier this year.

“He turned out to be a courageous person,” Mr Putin said, reports RTE.

“People show who they are in extraordinary circumstances. This is where a person reveals himself. And he showed himself, in my opinion, in a very correct manner, courageously. Like a man,” Mr Putin said, reports RTE.

While acknowledging that there was a greater chance of a transatlantic trade shock, Taoiseach Simon Harris characterised Mr. Trump as “transactional” and said he would recognise that trade between the US and the EU is a two-way street.

Mr. Harris was speaking as he arrived in Budapest for the European Political Community conference, which was attended by 27 EU members and 47 other European nations.

The meeting takes place as concerns in Ukraine about the US’s long-term commitment to defend Ukraine against the Russian invasion are heightened by Mr. Trump’s win in the US presidential election, reports RTE.

Among those attending the meeting is Volodymyr Zelensky, the president of Ukraine.

Mr. Harris stated that once Mr. Trump won the election, he hoped to talk to him.

He told reporters: “Mr Trump has won the election of the United States decisively, and obviously, the European Union and Ireland will now work with [the] democratically elected president elect of the United States. Europe and Ireland have already worked with President Trump in his previous administration. I think it’s now important that in the days, weeks and months ahead, we assess what President Trump may do versus the various policies that he has outlined,” reports RTE.
