Dr Ali Selim of the Irish Muslim Board has called on the government to adapt school uniforms to accommodate Islamic dress codes.
The group also called for uniforms that feature Christian symbols to be made optional for Muslim students.
The group says in the recommendations that
“Islamic religiously mandated code of dressing, deemed to be an essential component of their Muslim identity”.
The Irish Muslim Board submitted their recommendations to the Department of Education.
Dr Selim founded the group in 2016 to encourage Muslims to become more active politically and to lobby for Muslim issues.
The group also said that Muslim children often feel alienated at times for example at Christmas time when schools organise Nativity plays.
In a separate report covered by the Irish Times Muslim Primary Education Board has said that Muslim parents are find it increasingly difficult to secure Secondary Level places and notes the “baptismal barrier” exacerbates the problem.
