Group will oppose any move by Irish Water to divert Shannon waters to Dublin

A recent report published by Irish Water revealed that water demand in the Eastern and Midlands regions is set to greatly increase in the coming years, which means additional supply sources might need to be found. Demand in the Dublin area alone is projected to increase by 50% by the year 2050.

The Shannon river was identified as a potential source.

In the light of this, the River Shannon Protection Alliance (RSPA) group has today released a statement to say that it “wishes to make it clear that any such proposal will face the strongest opposition to such needless, high risk, and outmoded infrastructural planning”.

According to the group, hundreds of millions of litres per day would be extracted from the Shannon River and diverted to Dublin.

They added “Dublin does not now have a shortage of water, and it need not do so in the future. Current supplies are more than adequate for current demand, however Dublin City Council (DCC) has been throwing half of it away through years of leak ridden supply pipes and creaking treatment facilities, all of which have suffered from decades of neglect and under investment.”

The group added: “Injecting Shannon water into such a system would result in wastage of most of this new supply, while delivering only marginal improvement.’

Irish Water is currently calling for submissions regarding the proposed plans.
