Fine Gael’s caretake Minister for Health Simon Harris said on Primetime last night that the government need to be honest with the public.
Harris said:
“We have to be very honest with people, our best doctors are dealing with this for weeks.”
“It’s a new virus and on one knows what it is. There are things we can all do, not visiting elderly relatives if you’re not feeling well. Coughing, sneezing and wash your hands.”
Harris said that there’s at least three cases that can’t be explained how they got it. Harris said that there are real lessons to be learned from Italy. People need to be immediately isolated and anyone who was in contact with them needs to be contacted immediately.
He said:
“We can’t fool outselves – this isn’t fortress Ireland, we can’t stop coronavirus coming in.”
He said that the government’s resources want a curve that will not be like Italy.
Harris said that public health doctors say that they have to make the decision to lockdown the country at the right time with the right intervention at the right time for the right length of time.
