Have you noticed? Fuel prices drop in May, claims AA Ireland

Petrol and diesel prices fell in May after a long stretch of price stability, according to the latest AA Ireland Fuel Price Survey, reports RTE.

Petrol costs declined by four cents per litre to reach an average of €1.76 per litre, while diesel saw a sharper decrease of nine cents, dropping to an average of €1.68 per litre.

Meanwhile, Electric Vehicle (EV) running expenses remained the same for the third month in a row, reports RTE.

This month’s dip in fuel prices is likely the result of slightly lower global oil prices, improved supply dynamics, and a stronger euro against the US dollar, which has helped reduce Ireland’s fuel import costs.

“It’s good to see some easing at the pumps for petrol and diesel drivers, who’ve been paying more in recent months,” said a spokesperson from AA Ireland, reports RTE.

“These kinds of savings, even just a few cents, can add up quickly – especially for those with longer commutes or larger vehicles.”

AA Ireland also advises motorists to compare fuel prices in their local areas and find ways to reduce their costs, reports RTE.

“If you shop around – especially in border counties – you’ll often find cheaper rates than the national average,” the company said, reports RTE.

It added that EV drivers still benefit from stable and predictable operating costs, particularly those using home charging and night-rate electricity plans, reports RTE.
