Hay fever alert: Very high pollen levels forecast over next two days

High tree pollen levels are forecast for the next 48 hours in all regions of the country except Munster, with levels expected to drop to normal tomorrow, reports RTE.

Doctors have warned people with breathing problems could contract hay fever in the coming weeks.

Met Eireann says there is a high pollen risk from birch and ash, with a low risk on east coasts due to onshore winds.

The elevated levels of tree pollen at this time are expected to overlap with those of grass pollen the following month, reports RTE.

Most people with hay fever can have mild symptoms like sneezing, runny nose, itchy eyes.

Health experts say co-asthma can sometimes also trigger symptoms of the condition, such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, coughing and even wheezing.

Around 300,000 people in Ireland suffer from both hay fever and asthma, reports RTE.

Hospitals and GPs have seen a “rebound in all respiratory presentations” in the wake of Covid, as people generally stopped wearing masks, reports RTE.
