At least one person was killed and four were hospitalized after a multi-story parking garage collapsed in New York City Tuesday.
Aerial footage circulating on social media showed cars piled on top of each other in a pile of broken concrete in Lower Manhattan’s Financial District, reports RTE.
The building on Ann Street had “pancaked, collapsed, all the way to the cellar floor” said Kazimir Vilenchik, acting director of the New York City Department of Construction, at a press conference on site, reports RTE.
Its exterior remained standing, but officials said they feared another collapse.
John Esposito, the fire department’s chief of operations, said they ordered all of their first responders out of the building.
A robotics unit could deploy a robotic dog and fly a drone to conduct the search.
He said he believes six workers were in the building when it collapsed, reports RTE.
“Four of them have been transported to the hospital in stable condition. We have one patient that has died,” he told the news conference, reports RTE.
The sixth person refused medical treatment, he said.
Officials urged New Yorkers to avoid the area.
