He speaks for Ireland? Taoiseach reaffirms support for Ukraine at Paris conference

Leo Varadkar, the Taoiseach, is one of the twenty European leaders who will be visiting Paris later today to reiterate their support for Ukraine and tell Russian President Vladimir Putin that he is not going to be able to win a conflict that is about to enter its third year, reports RTE.

French President Emmanuel Macron requested the meeting at short notice because, according to his officials, Russian hostility has escalated in recent weeks.

The loss of Avdiivka, a strategically significant city in eastern Ukraine, and the passing of Russian anti-corruption activist Alexei Navalny occurred on the second anniversary of Russia’s invasion of that country, reports RTE.

To further reinforce the idea that Mr. Putin only needs to wait for western fatigue and division to hand him an inevitable victory in Ukraine, House Republicans in Washington are continuing to block $60 billion (€55 billion) in aid for the country at a time when it is running low on ammunition.

Macron has convened the discussion at the Élysée Palace specifically to convey to Mr. Putin that European determination remains unwavering despite the defeats faced by Ukraine, reports RTE.
