Vote No! Catholic bishops practically ask for No vote as they warn of proposed constitutional changes on family and care

Catholic bishops have stated that proposed amendments to the Constitution on family and care will weaken the bond between marriage and family, reports Breaking News.

On March 8, International Women’s Day, there will be two referendums proposing constitutional amendments.

One, known as the “family amendment,” seeks to change Article 41 of the Constitution to include families that are founded on “durable” connections rather than only those that are established by marriage, reports Breaking News.

While “marriage” is acknowledged as a public and legal commitment, the phrase “durable relationship” is “shrouded in uncertainty and is open to wide interpretation,” according to the Irish Catholic Bishops’ Conference.

In a statement, it said: “The proposed family amendment to the Constitution diminishes the unique importance of the relationship between marriage and family in the eyes of society and State, and is likely to lead to a weakening of the incentive for young people to marry,” reports Breaking News.

The second proposed modification, titled “Care Amendment,” calls for the removal of Articles 41.2.1 and 41.2.2, which discuss a woman’s responsibilities and functions in the house, and their replacement with Article 42B, which recognises family carers.
