Health advisor suggests that Covid-19 vaccine booster maybe required in the Autumn

People may need to get a Covid-19 vaccine booster later this year a top medical advisor has warned.

According to Anthony Harnden, the deputy chair of the UK government’s vaccine advisory committee people may need a booster shot in the autumn in order to protect against new variants.

Speaking to the British Medical Journal’s Talk Evidence podcast, Harnden said that a booster should would offer greater protection as it is not known how long immunity lasts from the current vaccines.

Harnden also said that the country wouldn’t want to be in a situation to that of last winter and the risks involved of issuing a booster shot would be less of there was no booster issued.

He added  I think the consequences of not immunising with the booster dose are so big and if it was proved later on that it was needed, it would be months too late.
