The Minister for Health Simon Harris has said that the current nurse’s strike action is not the answer when it comes to pay reforms.
Harris who was speaking in the Dáil on Thursday, said that all though it is regrettable that unions feel pay reforms are not coming quick enough, he reiterated that strike action is not the answer and called on the union’s involved to enter talks with the Government.
The Health Minister’s comments come as some 37,000 people took to the picket lines for a third day over a dispute in regards to pay and reforms.
Harris who claimed that the Government’s offer for talks was sincere, also claimed that the pay increase demands of the nurse’s unions are not feasible given financial restraints.
The Health Minister said that if the Government were to grant the unions a pay increase it would ultimately send public finances into an unsustainable spiral.
He added that although both parties have different views in regards to pay, he hoped that the issue could be resolved soon.
