Heartless indifference: HSE dismisses pleas to grant medical card to 9-year-old cancer sufferer Lucy O’Connor

In a now trademark decision, the HSE has appallingly refused to grant a medical card to a child living through cancer.

Despite Lucy’s torment, callous and indifferent HSE staff stated that the child does not qualify for a discretionary medical card.

Lucy was diagnosed with cancer in September last year. Her parents applied for a medical card to cover her treatment, but were refused. They appealed the decision, but the HSE once again turned their backs on the child and carried on looking elsewhere. A cold phone call was how Lucy’s mother, Angela, received the news.

Since they went public, and outraged nation poured in support for the O’Connors, with several fund raisers organized to cover the costs of Lucy’s treatment.

With years long waiting lists, people languishing in trolleys nationwide, and this cruel treatment of the nation’s children, the HSE is cementing its reputation of a failed and cruel organization.
