
Bertie Ahern has emerged as the leading Fianna Fáil contender for the upcoming presidential race, according to a new opinion poll.
The same poll also shows Mary Lou McDonald as the top choice among voters to represent Sinn Féin in the election, reports Breaking News.
The Ireland Thinks poll, published in today’s Sunday Independent, places former Taoiseach Bertie Ahern at the top among potential Fianna Fáil nominees, with 24 per cent support.
Next in line is current Taoiseach and party leader Micheál Martin, who secured 19 per cent backing — followed closely by Mary Hanafin at 18 per cent and Máire Geoghegan-Quinn at 17 per cent, reports Breaking News.
In Sinn Féin, 38 per cent of those surveyed believe Mary Lou McDonald should be the party’s presidential candidate.
Just over 25 per cent favour Michelle O’Neill, her counterpart in Northern Ireland, while around 20 per cent support Gerry Adams for the role, reports Breaking News.
On the issue of Gaza, more than half of respondents said they would continue to back the Palestinian cause even if it led to negative economic consequences for Ireland.
Additionally, two-thirds of those polled support passing the Occupied Territories Bill, despite nearly 40 per cent acknowledging it could harm the Irish economy, reports Breaking News.
