A woman and a teenage girl have appeared at Nenagh District Court charged with the murder of 29-year-old Scarlett Faulkner.

The new charges were brought following directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions, reports RTE.

The 17-year-old girl and 40-year-old woman appeared before the court this morning, where each was charged with murder.

The charges relate to the death of the 29-year-old mother-of-one following an alleged assault on the R494 at Birdhill, Co Tipperary, on 21 March, with Ms Faulkner dying in hospital three weeks later, reports RTE.

Detective Garda Séamas Kelly gave evidence of charging the 17-year-old girl with murder this morning.

He said the teenager, who cannot be named due to her age, made no reply when charged, reports RTE.

The teenager had previously been charged with assault causing serious harm, but that charge was withdrawn.

Detective Garda Colum Godfrey gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution of the 40-year-old woman, who also made no reply when charged, reports RTE.

Previous charges including violent disorder and endangerment have now been withdrawn.

The woman has now been charged with murder and two counts of burglary, reports RTE.

No bail was granted and the defendants were remanded in custody to appear again at Nenagh District Court via video link next Friday 17 July.

The book of evidence in both cases is due to be served at Nenagh District Court on 23 July, reports RTE.

The DPP has directed that the cases will then go to the Central Criminal Court for trial.

A psychological report has been prepared for the 17-year-old girl and Judge Marie Keane directed it be given to the prosecution, reports RTE.

Solicitors were present but neither of the defendants had formal representation due to the ongoing dispute between solicitors and the Department of Justice.

The solicitors were asked by the judge to speak to the defendants as a courtesy, reports RTE.

The judge also made an order restricting the posting of video on social media that could interfere with the trial.
