Three Nigerians living in Ireland have earned the distinction of the becoming the first people in the history of the state to be charged and thrown in prison in relation to a so-called “romance fraud” scam.

Nigerians, Rasak Sanni Sadu, Omawale Olamide Owalabi and Samson Ajayi who are all aged between 29 and 32 were brought before Dublin District Court yesterday morning charged with a series of suspected fraud offences after their arrest by the Garda National Economic Crime Bureau.

The three African migrants were arrested in Drogheda, Navan and Dublin as part of the Garda’s ‘Operation Engulf’, the Sun reported.

The alleged fraudsters committed the charges pressed against them between October 2019 and April of this 2020 and they were brought to the attention of authorities after a complaint from a Dublin woman who claims she was duped into investing in a project in the Middle East that never existed.

The unnamed woman alleges that after receiving correspondence on the dating website ‘Plenty of Fish’ last year from a man claiming to be a US oil rig worker who was in fact allegedly a phony profile belonging to the Nigerian men.

The three thugs have been handed down sentences between two and a half and three and a half years in prison by Judge Martin Nolan.
