
Volodymyr Zelensky has stated that he will “immediately” step down as president of Ukraine in return for NATO membership, reports RTE.
At a news conference in Kyiv, Mr. Zelensky stated that he would go “immediately” if required. “If there is peace for Ukraine, if you really need me to leave my post, I am ready… I can exchange it for NATO,” he said.
In order to assist Ukraine in defending itself against the Russian invasion, Mr. Zelensky stated that he hopes Donald Trump would “understand” his stance and provide specific security assurances, reports RTE.
“I want very much from Trump understanding of each other,” Mr Zelensky said, reports RTE.
“Security guarantees from Trump are much needed,” he added, reports RTE.
He said that he expects tomorrow, the third anniversary of the Russian invasion, will be a “turning point” in discussions with visiting international leaders.
“We have an important meeting tomorrow, a summit. Maybe it will be a turning point, we’ll see. We will have 13 leaders offline. There will also be 24 leaders online,” he said, reports RTE.
According to President Zelensky, the United States and Ukraine are getting closer to reaching a deal that would grant the US access to Ukrainian natural resources in return for security support.
“We are making progress,” Mr Zelensky said, reports RTE.
“We must do our best to achieve a lasting and just peace for Ukraine. This is possible with the unity of all partners: we need the strength of the whole of Europe, the strength of America, the strength of all those who want lasting peace,” MrZelensky said on Telegram, reports RTE.
Russia launched 267 drones overnight, according to the Ukrainian air force, which spokesperson Yuriy Ignat called “a record for a single attack” since the invasion started over three years ago.
In a Facebook post, he stated that 119 of them were “lost” without inflicting harm, while 138 were intercepted by air defence, reports RTE.
He did not disclose the fate of the other ten, but according to a different military statement posted on Telegram, Kyiv was among the “hit” locations.
Regional officials said this morning that a Russian missile assault in the central town of Kryvyi Rig late yesterday killed one individual and injured five others, reports RTE.
Throughout the conflict, Ukraine has attempted to disrupt Russian logistics further from the front, most notably by striking military outposts and industrial targets inside Russia itself, in an effort to stop the daily Russian strikes.
