The President of the High Court has ordered the immediate release of the four anti-water charges protesters held in Mountjoy, after upholding a challenge to the legality of a committal warrant underpinning their detention.
Such challenge arose from errors in the actual committal warrant, not in relation to the court hearing which led to their conviction.
There were loud displays of support in court after the judge made his ruling, and the four were immediately granted freedom.
The judge stated that the four remain lawfully convicted and properly sentenced. The issue that was raised, and what has led to their freedom, was in terms of the instrumentality of how the four people were actually committed.
