Holiday hell looms as talks to avert Spanish air traffic controller strike fail

If you are scheduled to fly to Spain on Monday morning, you may be in for a nasty surprise, as the first of eight proposed two-hour walkouts by air traffic controllers is set to go ahead at 10am as planned.

Holidaymakers are facing chaotic disruption during the coming week, with as many as 450,000 passengers at Palma Airport alone expected to be affected.

Local authorities have put contingency plans in place to deal with what could potentially be thousands of people stranded in holiday destinations. A network of hotel beds have been reserved to accommodate them, should they find themselves with nowhere to go.

Over 80% of union members voted in favor of the walkouts, which are scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday.
