A murder investigation has been launched today following the death of Paul McAuley, who was the victim of a vicious attack in Derry nine years ago.
Mr. McAuley suffered severe brain damage and never regained consciousness after a loyalist gang attacked him at a barbeque in the Waterside in July 2006. Up to 15 people were involved in the assault, but so far, only one person, Daryl Proctor, has been jailed. He walked free this year.
Despite ongoing enquiries, nobody else involved in the attack has ever been brought to justice.
It is understood Mr. McAuley passed away in the early hours of this morning.
