A councillor from Dublin City has admitted he is ashamed of himself and Dublin city council after the Inner City Helping Homeless (ICHH) charity found the family sleeping in Mountjoy Square Park.

Gary Cannon a local North Inner City Councillor said that the fact that people were being told to sleep rough showed a huge failing of the Government.

“I’m ashamed of myself as a Dublin City Councillor and I am  ashamed that it happened in my constituency”

The park is situated in the north inner city part of Dublin.

The charity stated that the family in question, consisting of three children below the age of five, were given sleeping bags, told that there was no room for them and to come back the next day.

The family had been evicted from their home in Fatima, three days previously it has been reported.

ICHH have said that the family had been looked after last night by the charity and that tonight accomodation was being sought for them.

In July, Dublin City Council stated that they were short €18.5 million in the budget used to provide homeless services.

Councillors have warned that services may stop if the shortage of money is not addressed.

Recent figures show that the number of homeless families has risen by a huge 55% since the beginning of 2015.
