A hunter killed a seven-year-old boy after he thought it was a wild turkey, police said. The boy and his adult brother were both hit on Tuesday while they were hunting in Camp Creek State Park, West Virginia, USA.
The two were killed when a third turkey hunter, who was not part of their group, shot “at something he could not clearly see” after believing that the movement of the victim was that of a wild bird, according to West Virginia Department of Natural Resources officer GW Wood.
The boy was transported by helicopter to the Charleston Area Medical Center for surgery due to internal injuries. His condition was classified as stable on Thursday while police have not yet released his brother’s name. An update on the older brother’s condition has not been released, although he is believed to have been less seriously injured.
The Mercer County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the shooting and will decide whether or not to charge the man. The Bluefield Daily Telegraph reported that it would depend on the severity of the injuries to the seven-year-old boy.
