Police in the US State of California have arrested a man and a woman in suspicion of murder following the death of a 1-day-old baby boy at a hospital.
According to ABC News, the couple were arrested after police were alerted by doctors that the baby boy was in critical condition.
It is understood that Andrea Torralba, 20, and David Villa, 21, were arrested after they allegedly strangled Andrea’s newborn son at St Michael’s Medical Center, in Oxnard, on Friday.
ABC reports that police uncovered that the pair decided to strangle the newborn as they did not want him.
It is believed that police were alerted to the incident after the child was found to have suspicious injuries by medical staff at the hospital.
Although the couple initially denied that they intended to kill the newborn who was just hours old, it is reporteded that Andrea confessed to the killing of her son as she did not want him and he wasn’t David’s son.
Police investigating the incident say the baby boy was sadly pronounced dead shortly after they arrived despite a number of efforts by medical personnel.
They added that both Torralba and Villa have been arrested and have been placed on $1m and $5m bonds respectively.
Reports state that both Torralba and Villa could face between 25 years to life in prison if they are found guilty of murder.
