Animal activists have described horrific scenes in China as thousands of dead pets were discovered in a logistics postal centre.
Over five thousand animals, including dogs, cats, and rabbits, were crammed into small boxes in a centre in central Henan province, the Mirror reports. Activists say the animals died from suffocation, thirst and starvation due to the cramped and deprived conditions they were being transported in.
It is understood the pets were being shipped from breeding farms on China’s east coast to online customers across the country. They were kept in small plastic or iron cages within paper boxes, with just a few holes cut in the top for oxygen.
China has long had a bad reputation for appalling animal rights abuses across the country, and this case has sparked global condemnation from activists across the world.
