Seven hospitals each generated over €1 million in parking fees last year, reports Breaking News.
Across the country, patients, visitors, and healthcare workers collectively paid close to €19 million in parking charges in 2024.
Cork University Hospital topped the list, collecting €2.3 million in fees, reports Breaking News.
The data was provided to Labour TD Mark Wall, who is urging the Minister for Health to eliminate parking charges for both patients and hospital staff.
Speaking on Newstalk, Wall said: “Well the government have to foot the bill, like I don’t think anybody would be against reasonable hospital charges, you know, for the care of the car park, the upkeep of the car park. I don’t think anybody would be against that. But €2.3 million would cover an awful lot of car parks over the period of a year,” reports Breaking News.
“It’s really about the cost of being sick, and it’s unacceptable that hospitals are raking in €19 million when people are at their lowest ebb,” reports Breaking News.
