Housing out of control – Over 3,200 applications for just 46 apartments in Dublin

For 46 flats in Google’s Bolands Mills Quarter in Dublin, which are available at reduced rentals, more than 3,200 applications have been received, reports RTE.

Of the applications, just 24 percent satisfied the qualifying standards, and 44 percent were declared ineligible due to their failure to meet the requirements.

The deadline for the remaining candidates to complete their submissions is this evening at 5 p.m, reports RTE.

All eligible applicants will be entered into a lottery after the application window ends this evening.

The flats, which are for important professionals including teachers, nurses, and gardaí, were introduced two weeks ago, reports RTE.

Along with meeting qualifying requirements related to affordability, household size, and maximum income levels, applicants must also have ties to the community.

The rentals for the units are up to 36% less than the going rate.

Ten three-bedroom apartments cost €1,850 per month, one huge three-bedroom apartment costs €2,100 per month, and 35 two-bedroom flats cost €1,710, reports RTE.

Following a competitive procurement procedure, Google chose Clúid, the non-profit housing organisation, to lease and operate all 46 flats in the complex.

“Due to the high number of applicants relative to the available homes, we will conduct a lottery to ensure a fair selection process,” said John Cotterell, Head of Housing at Clúid Housing, reports RTE.

“The lottery is managed by an external agency, ensuring a full audit trail for transparency. If an application is successful, the applicant will have 72 hours to upload the necessary documents and complete the application process, so we encourage those eligible to get their paperwork in order,” Mr Cotterell said, reports RTE.

In return for a tiny minimal fee, Google has leased the premises to Clúid for 25 years.

Clúid will keep the rentals in order to pay for the upkeep of the properties, reports RTE.

The residences are situated on Barrow Street in Dublin 4 in a newly built structure and a restored heritage property.

In 2018, Bolands Mills was acquired by Google.

There is significant historical value to the complex and its environs, reports RTE.

Rebel soldiers took the buildings during the Easter Rising in 1916.

Éamon de Valera’s 3rd Battalion of Irish Volunteers had its headquarters in the adjacent Boland’s Bakery, which later became the Treasury Building, reports RTE.

The first phase of Google’s Bolands Mills construction opened in September 2023.

The complex’s historic Flour Mills building has been renovated and turned into a Google-specific collaborative area, reports RTE.
