Pope Francis off ventilation again and is doing well, Vatican says

The Vatican said that Pope Francis, who has been battling double pneumonia for over three weeks, has been removed off mechanical ventilation after utilising it during the night to aid with his breathing, reports RTE.

The 88-year-old’s treatment has been constantly changing since he was brought to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14 due to a serious respiratory illness.

Francis’ ongoing struggle to recover from the deadly disease was highlighted by the Vatican, which revealed that he was linked to non-invasive mechanical ventilation overnight after it had been disconnected throughout the day yesterday, reports RTE.

According to the Vatican, the pope has recently resumed receiving a high-flow of oxygen through a tiny nasal tubing beneath his nose.

According to a brief statement from the Vatican, “The pope rested well during the night,” and he woke up just after 8 a.m. (7 a.m. Irish time), reports RTE.

When in good health, the pope often begins his day long before sunrise.

Francis experienced two bouts of “acute respiratory insufficiency” on Monday, according to the Vatican.

The pope stayed stable throughout the day and did not experience any fresh respiratory problems, according to yesterday’s health update, which was more positive, reports RTE.

His physicians did, however, restate that his prognosis was “guarded,” indicating that he was still in danger.

This evening at about 7 p.m. (8 p.m. Irish time), the most recent health bulletin is anticipated, reports RTE.

“I believe it to be really serious. At St. Peter’s Square, Brazilian visitor Liana Cardozo remarked, “Of course, we are all very worried about him.”

Since going into the hospital, the pope has not been seen in public for the longest time since he began his pontificate twelve years ago. The duration of the therapy has not been disclosed by his physicians, reports RTE.

Even prominent cardinals have speculated that Francis may resign like his predecessor Benedict XVI did because of his protracted absence.

However, the pontiff’s friends and biographers saw him as a “fighter,” who had no intention of stepping down.

The pope has already missed many Church events due to his sickness, including Ash Wednesday, a liturgy on March 5 that usually marks the beginning of the 40-day period leading up to Easter Sunday, reports RTE.

Because he suffered pleurisy as a young adult and had a portion of one lung removed, Francis is prone to lung infections and has had many episodes of illness over the past two years.

A dangerous illness that affects both lungs, double pneumonia can cause inflammation and scarring, making breathing difficult, reports RTE.
