HPRA begins investigation into Covid antigen test thought to be giving “false positives”

The Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) has opened an investigation into claims that an antigen test is giving higher than expected “false positives”.

According to the Irish Times, the test with the brand name “Genrui” is being investigated for this reason.

A false positive test result means that the antigen test shows the person using the test is infected with Covid-19, but when the person gets a PCR test carried out, the PCR test shows there is no Covid-19
infection.

According to the Irish Times, the HPRA says it has received a number of reports from medical professionals and members of the public over the performance of the Genrui antigen test.

The HPRA is following up with the antigen test manufacturer to investigate the matter. The HPRA will also consult with other European authorities in relation to the higher than expected false positive
results.
